Labour research service (LRS)

The Labour Research Service (LRS) is a membership-based labour support organisation established in 1986. We support the core functions of trade unions such as collective bargaining and organising and help to link unions with other role-players and constituencies. Our work influences policies that will enable workers to fully claim their rights. We support global union federations in building trade unions and trade union networks around multinational companies in Africa. We influence approaches to gender equality and gender-based violence in unions and within communities in South Africa and Africa. We work to develop new layers of worker leaders within trade unions and in so doing support the reproduction of these important organs of civil society.

National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS)

Department: Basic Education (DBE)

ORSSA is South Africa’s national, professional body for operations research. Founded in 1969, its aim is to further the interests of those engaged in, or interested in the discipline.


ORSSA’s activities include drawing up guidelines for operations research education at Universities in South Africpresenting short courses, and providing information to the public on the nature of operations research and on career opportunities.

Higher Health (HH)

On behalf of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), HIGHER HEALTH works with Universities South Africa (USAf) and the South African College and Principals Organisation (SACPO).We achieve our goals in partnership with allied government agencies, the private sector, UN and other development agencies and civil society formations.
In 2019, HIGHER HEALTH emerged from the Higher Education and Training HIV and AIDS Programme (HEAIDS), which was established in early 2000s by the then Department of Education and international development partners in order to reduce the impact of HIV/TB on higher education. Prevention of HIV/TB and effective treatment for students living with HIV/TB was a central feature of HEAIDS programme and remains one of the seven core focus areas of HIGHER HEALTH. Since 2014, the organisation has diversified its programme to take account of a range of health, wellness and developmental challenges that confront students and to promote wellness in a more holistic manner.
