Continue reading →The Society aims to promote and improve the breeding, genetic quality, and productivity of Shorthorn and Swedish Red cattle. It works to preserve the purity of these breeds, encourage their development through sound selection and production testing, and prevent contamination from other breeds. The Society maintains breed standards, pedigree records, and herd book registrations to ensure accurate documentation and genetic integrity. It also promotes participation in agricultural shows, approves and nominates qualified judges, and encourages the use of certified judges at cattle events. In addition, the Society supports the collection and evaluation of production and conformation data to improve breed performance and safeguard the interests of breeders. Overall, its purpose is to advance the development, recognition, and welfare of the Shorthorn and Swedish Red breeds while promoting the common interests of their breeders.

Being the second largest breed in numbers in the world and still a 100% pure breed, Hereford cattle, since the late 1700’s, and over more than 100 years in South Africa, always have been a major contributor to the world’s beef production. Hereford cattle are primarily a beef cattle breed and therefore have all the traits required for maximum and efficient beef production. However, the females are also very fertile, docile, good for milk production and produce enough milk to raise heavy, healthy calves.
