The Racing Association was incorporated in December 1997 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Horseracing Industry in Gauteng and the Gauteng Provincial Government. The essence of the agreement, signed on 30 June 1997, was that the parties agreed to re-organise and restructure the business of the racing industry into a single corporate entity to be listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as soon as practically possible. The new company would have a broad base of shareholders with specific emphasis on previously disadvantaged communities.

Unfortunately, a significant portion of these newcomers lack the necessary expertise and knowledge to meet the desired quality standards. Consequently, consumers often fall victim to roofers and waterproofers who employ imported materials ill-suited to the country’s unique weather and climate conditions. Recognizing the urgent need for oversight and regulation, The Professional Roof Repair and Waterproofing Association (PRAWA) was established in 2019. Serving as a regulatory body, PRAWA enforces stringent industry minimum standards and ensures the credibility of its licensed members through thorough vetting, comprehensive training opportunities via CPD implementation and assessment of their existing skills to ensure their compliance with industry minimum standards.

Membership with PRAWA requires contractors to fulfill a range of criteria, including operating as a registered company, holding a valid tax clearance certificate, possessing public liability insurance, workman’s compensation coverage, and complying with all relevant legislative requirements.

National Community Based Paralegal Association (NCBPA)

The National Community Based Paralegal Association (NCBPA) represents paralegals and advice offices from all nine provinces in South Africa. Although its purpose is to serve as a voice and advocate for the paralegal sector, it has often been used as a funding conduit by international donors. There is a critical need for the NCBPA to clarify its role as an advocate for the paralegal sector.Funding will support a year-long organizational development and strategic planning process including sharing and analyzing new policies through workshops; training provincial NCBPA management committees in management, administration, finance, community development and service delivery; developing a three-year program plan; and exploring mechanisms for an appropriate funding conduit for the paralegal sector.The NCBPA was established in 1996 as a national network of paralegals. Its mission is to develop and coordinate the work of affiliate legal advice offices across the country to improve understanding and access to rights.

Post Natal Depression Support Association (PNDSA)

PNDSA (The Post-Natal Depression Support Association of South Africa) was officially constituted in February 1997, by a small group of health professionals, and “PND survivors”, under the leadership of Liz Mills. It is a registered non-profit association funded by donations from the private individuals, companies and membership fees, and is staffed, almost entirely, by volunteers. Charges for services are calculated on a sliding scale. Some professional members of PNDSA offer their services at a reduced rate.

While many mothers, do, in fact, experience the birth of a baby as a “happy event”; PNDSA is concerned with the ten to thirty percent of parents, for whom this is not true.
