The Gold Reef Rose Society’s inauguration was held in January 1988 and Margaret Dams was the first Chairman. By June 1988 the membership was approximately 30 and the first function was a pruning demonstration held at the Botanical Gardens in July.

The organisation began in response to an increasing need for intervention to preserve Judaeo-Christian ethics and sound science within the medical profession and, in particular, protect the sanctity of life from fertilisation until natural death.
Medical professionals experience first-hand the devastating effects of societal harms such as abortions, drug misuse, suicide, sexually transmitted diseases, domestic violence and sexual assault. DFL is an organisation through which medical professionals and the broader community are able to unite as one voice and intervene in these matters. Since DFL first opposed the legalisation of abortion in South Africa in 1991 other ethical issues have been challenged including euthanasia, pornography, sexual exploitation, substance abuse and the role of alternative medicine.

In forming a new chamber of commerce and industry, the unifying bodies agreed to forego their independent identities. Following the unification, the Bloemfontein Chamber of Commerce and Industry is actively campaigning for recognition of the local and provincial governments as the representative of the business community in Bloemfontein as well as the Free State. The membership of the BCCI consists of over 500 companies – a membership that places the Chamber as one of the top 10 chambers of commerce in South Africa
