Historical Association of South Africa (HASA)

The Historical Association of South Africa is the oldest professional organisation in the country for historians specialising in aspects of southern African history. The Association has as its main objective the furtherance of history as a discipline in particular the study and understanding of the history of South Africby means of the following:

Ø the encouragement of history as a subject in South African universities, colleges of education and schools;
Ø the improvement of the quality of the teaching of History as a subject generally;
Ø the development and awareness of the importance of History;
Ø by publishing historical journals/magazines;
Ø by publishing any other publications of a historical nature and by supporting the publishing of historical material;
Ø by collecting historical documents and archival material and depositing them to the relevant South African archives;
Ø by promoting historical documents and archival material and depositing them to the relevant South African archives;
Ø by promoting historical museums through collecting relevant pieces for the museums;
Ø by co-operating with statutory bodies and other institutions involved with the preservation or restoration of historical artefacts (and articles); and
Ø by working together with other organisations to promote common ideals.

Heritage Western Cape (HWC)

Heritage Western Cape is a provincial heritage resources authority.

Established in January 2003, this public entity seeks to identify, protect and conserve the rich and diverse heritage resources of the Western Cape.

There are landscapes, sites, artefacts, buildings and structures that are of significance to the people of the Western Cape. Identifying, protecting and conserving these heritage resources will ensure that they are promoted and conserved for generations to come.

Gunners Association (GASA)

The Gunners’ Association of South Africa is the only custodian of the National Gunners’ Memorial that stands in Potchefstroom along the Ventersdorp road, next to the old camp entrance that still exists today. The Memorial lists all the names of the know men and women that gave their lives while serving the guns.

Genealogical Society of South Africa (GISA)

The Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) is also known as Die Genealogiese Genootskap van Suid-Afrika. It was established in 1964 has twelve branches of which eleven are land based and one which is an electronic branch catering for members worldwide, via the internet. Each branch arranges its own activities and meets all year round apart from December and January. More information can be gleaned by visiting the branch pages of www.genza.org.za. Members become close friends and are more than happy to assist newcomers with their research. Many a dead end has been resolved by discussing the issue with a fellow genealogist.

South African History Online (SAHO)

South African History Online (SAHO) was established in 1998 and registered in June 2000 as a not for profit Section 21 organisation. SAHO has over two decades become the largest and most comprehensive online website on South African and African history and culture.

SAHO website, is linked to a partnership programme with universities, schools and community based history projects. It has become an integral part of the higher education landscape and the go to website for information on South African and African history with just over 6m visitors a year.

SAHO, is recognised as a national cultural and heritage asset. In April 2018 the State President awarded the CEO and Founder of SAHO, Omar Badsha, the National Order of Ikhamanga (silver), “for his commitment to the preservation of our country’s history through ground-breaking and well-balanced research and collection of profiles and events of the struggle for liberation.” SAHO is also a winner of the National Institute of Humanities and Social Science Annual Award for digital Humanities.
