Phaphama SEDI (PHAPHAMA)

Phaphama SEDI is a non-profit organisation that was started in 2014 by a small group of dynamic UCT students. The aim of Phaphama was to increase the entrepreneurial capacity of small businesses in the Khayelitsha and Philippi area by connecting them with a consulting team of senior UCT students.

Each entrepreneur is teamed for the entirety of the programme with three student consultants. These groups, comprising of diverse academic backgrounds and skill sets, mean that each business owner will receive consistent and specialised attention throughout the year, in addition to the overarching skills-building training they will receive in the module workshops.

To date we have worked with over 100 small to medium enterprises and over 300 student consultants. In doing so, we labour tirelessly to make success a reality for our entrepreneurs, at the same time we seek to equip our consultants with practical skills. We want student consultants to experience what it is like to work with the local business community.

The Haven Night Shelter Utility Company (Reg No. 83/10007/08) is a registered Section 21 company in terms of South African law and is currently tax exempt in terms of Sec. 10(1)(f) of the Income Tax Act. This structure was created to facilitate the legal standing of the Public Benefit Organisation.

The Haven Night Shelter was established in 1978 in Cape Town, South Africa. We were registered as a Section 21 (a) (Not for Gain) Public Company in 1983, a Non Profit Organisation in 2000, and as a Public Benefit Organisation in 2004.

Also known as the LWO Werkgewersorganisasie, the organisation is registered as an employers’ organisation with the Department of Labour – this means that we are authorised to represent our members in the CCMA, Bargaining Councils and Labour Court. The LWO is a non-profit members’ organisation, managed by a board (successful business owners and leading academics) consisting of members of the organisation. LWO was established in 1990 to provide employers in the broader South African business community with labour law services and other related services in the field of labour law.
