The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) has played an integral role in shaping South Africa into a country where persons with disabilities have access to equal opportunities and rights. For the past 81 years we have run awareness programmes, influenced government policies, promoted physical and social access, and facilitated economic participation for and with persons with disabilities.

The NLC regulates the National Lottery Operator, Society lotteries, Private Lotteries and Lotteries Incidental to exempt entertainment. The NLC ensures that the interest of all participants in lotteries are protected and ensure that all lotteries are conducted with due propriety. The NLC police any other lottery type schemes. The NLC monitors and regulates the running of various lottery competitions, including those organised by non-profit organisations to raise funds and by companies to promote their goods and services.

NEHAWU struggles for union recognition, a living wage and a free and democratic South Africa. NEHAWU members faced brutal repression from the apartheid regime which saw the union as a direct challenge to its control of the public service. In other sectors, bitter struggles were fought against employers with reactionary practices like the Lifecare Group, Clinic Holdings, various old age homes, universities and technikons.
The battle cry of NEHAWU’s national strike in 1992 was “Wawutshelwe ubani ukuthi I-NEHAWU ifile?” Who told you that NEHAWU is dead? This slogan highlights the union’s will to survive.
The National Institute for the Deaf (NID) was founded in 1881 as the Doofstommen Instituut. The establishment of the Institute was an answer to a shared dilemma faced by two reverends of the Dutch Reformed Church. Both had Deaf congregants, but no idea how to serve them with the Word of God because they couldn’t communicate with them. The Institute was thus established to help Deaf people read and write so that they could read the Bible and also have access to the same rights as the hearing.
Some 138 years after the Doofstommen Instituut opened its doors, having seen many changes in its own history and that of the country it serves, NID has become a private, dynamic, innovative non-profit company.
