Birdlife eThekwini KZN (BEKZN)

Birdlife eThekwini KZN was established in Durban in 1949 as the Natal Bird Club and as such is one of the oldest bird clubs in Africa. It is also one of the larger clubs affiliated to Birdlife South Africa, which in turn is the national partner of Birdlife International, the largest conservation organisation in the world. As an affiliate club Birdlife eThekwini KZN , shares the goals of BLSA as they relate to conservation of birds and habitats within KZN and therefore the club plays an important role in conservation, as well as influencing various aspects of birding in KZN and southern Africa.

The Cuckoo Bird Club was started in 1998 by Monty Brett. The first members were graduates on the Sappi/Brett Beginners Bird Course of 1997. The club is known for its laid back attitude to birding, for fun, knowledge and pleasure. Outings are designed to be pleasant and appeal to all, young and old, experienced and inexperienced and to cover most of the habitats that will provide the greatest variety of birds.

Border Canoe Club (BCC)

The Border Canoe Club (BCC) has been in existence since 1987, and represents the river Canoeing and Surfski disciplines in the greater East London area. In recent years, the resurgence in popularity of paddling has meant significant growth for the club, which now has over 300 members. A number of national Surfski and river canoeing paddlers have come out of the BCC, and the club continues to produce world class paddlers.

The club is very active, with no fewer than twenty races organised each year. The weekly highlight for many is the Time Trial. Every Wednesday evening, paddlers test their times over a 9,4km river course. This is followed by a social gathering of families and a hearty meal in the clubhouse.
