Law Society of South Africa (LSSA)

Attorneys and advocates in South Africa are registered with the Legal Practice Council in terms of the Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014. Since 1998 the Law Society of SA (LSSA) has represented the attorneys’ profession. The Law Society of South Africa brings together the Black Lawyers Association, the National Association of Democratic Lawyers and independent attorneys, in representing the attorneys’ profession in South Africa.

Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA)

This Association was previously called the “Corporate Lawyers Association of SA”. The Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA), previously known as the Corporate Lawyers Association of South Africa (CLASA),was formed in 1982 to promote the common interests of corporate counsel in South Africa as the South African Government does not formally recognize or endorse CCASA or its members.

Environmental Law Association (ELA)

The ELA is a non-profit organisation with its main objective to promote and assist in the development and application of environmental law in South Africa. The organisation attracts members from an array of different environmentally-relevant disciplines which results in the ELA being an ideal forum for networking and the sharing of information and knowledge in the field of environmental law. The organization endeavors to keep up with the needs of its members and is therefore open to suggestions and recommendations on the type of assistance that the organisation could offer to its members and to others.

Pretoria Society of Advocates (PSA)

The Pretoria Society of Advocates, commonly known as the Pretoria Bar, is a voluntary association of advocates affiliated with a number of other Bars in the General Council of the Bar of South Africa (www.sabar.co.za). Such an association of practising advocates is traditionally referred to as a Bar. Apparently this tradition started in the United Kingdom when the newspapers of Fleet Street referred to barristers (the English equivalent of an advocate), then starting to appear in criminal courts in defence of an accused, as “the Gentlemen at the Bar”. This “bar” was a reference to the copper bar or railing in front of the accused in the dock, next to which his or her defender stood, and not a reference to a place serving beverages.

Organisation of South African Law Libraries (OSALL)

OSALL is the Organisation of South African Law Libraries – the national law library organisation of South Africa and was established in 1976. There are about 150 members from university libraries, bar associations, private law firms, the government sector, courts and publishing houses. Our head quarters are in Gauteng but we have members all over South Africa. We welcome membership applications from anyone interested in law librarianship.

The Objective of PALSA is to unite all Paralegals, Legal Secretaries and Professional Legal Assistants. To bring full recognition and regulation to their profession. It is intended to promote and enable self-employed as well as to give Independent Paralegals the much needed platform and ability, along with the recognition and the support, to be able to work efficiently in their role. That their work be promoted, recognized and put forward as a necessary and vital part of the legal world, as well as be made a part of their communities. In fact, that their role both as independent or employed legal practitioners must be grown and acknowledged across all legal spectrums. To reflect that the paralegal, in any field, is a valuable and necessary part of the legal process and it’s functioning.

Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU)

POPCRU is an affiliate of Congress of the South African Trade Unions [COSATU] and the World Federation of Trade Unions [WFTU]. There is active participation in these two formations by the movement.
Our continued fight over the last 22 years has been inspired by the quest for justice for all and fairness. We hold the view that labour rights cannot be separated from human rights. The essence of collective leadership has kept us going over the years. We shall continue to wage our struggles alongside community struggles.

Pretoria Attorneys Association (PAA)

The Pretoria Attorneys Association is a voluntary association representing the interests of Attorneys practising in the Pretoria area. The Association assists its members in liaising with public bodies such as the Deeds Office, the Master’s Office, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission and the Courts. The Association also keeps its members abreast of any changes in the functioning of these bodies by sending information and circulars affecting members’ practices to them on a regular basis.

National Community Based Paralegal Association (NCBPA)

The National Community Based Paralegal Association (NCBPA) represents paralegals and advice offices from all nine provinces in South Africa. Although its purpose is to serve as a voice and advocate for the paralegal sector, it has often been used as a funding conduit by international donors. There is a critical need for the NCBPA to clarify its role as an advocate for the paralegal sector.Funding will support a year-long organizational development and strategic planning process including sharing and analyzing new policies through workshops; training provincial NCBPA management committees in management, administration, finance, community development and service delivery; developing a three-year program plan; and exploring mechanisms for an appropriate funding conduit for the paralegal sector.The NCBPA was established in 1996 as a national network of paralegals. Its mission is to develop and coordinate the work of affiliate legal advice offices across the country to improve understanding and access to rights.
