National Religious Association for Social Development (NRSAD)

NRSAD represents the concerns and interests of different faith welfare networks, which include Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish traditions. It has established itself in a relatively short period as an important national role-player that strives to fulfil the following functions:


  • consultations with government departments and ministries;

  • joint lobby processes for changes on programme level; and

  • implementation of a new development partnership with the government.

Islamic Social and Welfare Association (ISWA)

The Islamic Social Welfare Association was formed in 1996 to seek solutions for the social problems amongst Muslims and its negative effects on society. Miss Gadija Fredericks and Mrs Nurounihaar Mintin co-ordinated a meeting with the Muslim Judicial Council where Imams, Social Workers and Community Workers, all voiced their concerns and attempted to start a structure to address these concerns.

There was an unanimous appeal for a professional social work agency that would use a model that integrated social science with in the Islamic framework. The meeting resulted in nine Muslims fully committing themselves to the establishment of such a structure.

The primarily aim of this structure was to address marital problems. This was to be achieved through pre-marital counselling, providing a treatment for marriages under stress and providing post divorce guidance for couples (especially women) who were left destitute. The overwhelming need for proper social services in all areas of social disfunctioning let ISWA to broaden its vision to include other counselling as well.

Association of Muslim Schools South Africa (AMS)

The Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) was launched in March 1989 at the Lockhat Islamia School (Al Falaah College) in Durban. Principals and members of the Board of Governors of Habibiya Islamic College, Lockhat Islamia College, Roshnee Muslim School, As­-Salaam, Lenasia Muslim School and Nur-ul-Islam School came together to form this association.

The need was felt to establish an organization to advise Muslim Schools and help them in their development at all levels.

The purpose of the Society is to encourage, develop and support scholarship and research in the field of the New Testament and related disciplines in general, and specifically within the South African context, to stimulate effective teaching, to promote publication in the field, and to offer its members opportunities for mutual support, intellectual growth, and professional development. The society also strives for sensitivity and inclusivity regarding race, gender and disabilities. The society successfully implemented a postgraduate affiliation (PANTSSA), which provides opportunity for young scholars to share and develop their research.
