The NFTN is a programme of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) hosted by the CSIR.
Continue reading →The Metal Merchants Association was registered as an employer’s association in 1942 during WWII when South Africa introduced the Strategic Metals Act which severely limited the movement of secondary metal for recycling.
In 1999 the association changed its name to Metal Recyclers Association of South Africa (MRA) to accurately depict its involvement in the metal recycling industry. The constitution was amended and registered with the Department of Labour. The association adopted a code of conduct that commits its members to the highest degree of business ethics.
Today the MRA has a diverse membership base made up of organisations that are engaged in the collection and processing of more than 80% of all scrap metal in South Africa for beneficiation by downstream industry.
Continue reading →The Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) is a statutory body created under the Labour Relations Act (LRA) to provide for the co-regulation of stable and productive employment relations in the metal and engineering industries.
The council is an industry based forum of organised business and labour that regulates employment conditions and labour relations in the metal and engineering industry. It provides the necessary, administrative infrastructure and technical expertise to ensure effective collective bargaining, industry compliance, dispute resolution and social protection services. As at end of November, The Council represented approximately 10 624 firms and 306 747 employees in the industry.
Continue reading →The Launching of MEWUSA was the first implementation of the principle of one union one industry in the National Council of Trade Unions since it was fromed in 1986. The union was launched against a background of co-ordinated state attacks against trade unions and democratic movement, as well as tough annual wage negotiations with metal employers who were also planning to deregulate some businesses in the metal industry. Against this repressive background thousands of workers flocked to NASREC on the 27 of May 1988 to launch the Metal and Electrical Workers Union of South Africa(MEWUSA). Unions which participated in the merger were the Black Electrical and Electronics Workers Union(BEEWU), the Electrical and Allied Workers Trade Union(EAWTUSA and the Engineering and Allied Workers Union(EAWUSA). Metal and Electrical Workers Union of South Africa is a Non-Racial, Non-Sexist, Democratic socialist union of the workers ,established and organised by the workers to fight against the frustrations of the workers with employers and to unite them with other workers in common struggle for their thoroughly democratic and social aspirations as the most revolutionary class in our modern capitalist society, the proletariat.bca
