Founded in 1918, the IFE assesses knowledge of fire and professional experience, awarding internationally recognised membership grades and fire-related qualifications. Through its Engineering Council licence as a Professional Engineering Institution (PEI), the IFE registers suitably qualified IFE members as Chartered Engineers (CEng), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Engineering Technicians (Eng Tech). Learning opportunities are worldwide within the IFE fire community and the IFE delivers over 7,300 fire-related exams each year which are required by many Fire and Rescue Services for promotion both within the UK and internationally.

It was officially launched on 27 November 2014. The aim of the Institute is the professionalisation of the position of the municipal manager. In terms of its Constitution, among others, it aims to ensure that the municipalities’ collective institutional memory is not lost to local government, generally , and to municipalities, specifically, while setting norms, standards and values for Municipal Accounting Officers.

IPET strives to improve the image and status of engineering technologists of all disciplines and is hard at work to ensure that they get the recognition they so richly deserve.
IPET has succeeded in getting the National Building Regulations altered so as to authorise professional technologists to sign building plans as competent persons.
It has provided exclusivity in its membership by allowing only Professional Engineering Technologists as full corporate members of the Institute.
It has for years been trying to get full recognition for the engineering technologist in the Government Service and it is continuing the battle.
It is instrumental in the provision of Liability Insurance for its members in private practice.
IPET assists applicants who have been unsuccessful in obtaining registration as Professional Engineering Technologists in obtaining this sought-after status.
The Institution of Certificated Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, South Africa (ICMEESA), is the only learning and vocational institution that caters for all certificated electrical and mechanical engineers in South Africa. It is also the only institution for certificated engineers that enjoys statutory recognition in terms of the Engineering Profession of South Africa Act.
