PHASA advocates equitable access to the basic conditions necessary to achieve health for all South African as well as equitable access to effective health care. PHASA will work with other public health associations and related organisations and advocate on national and international issues that impact on the conditions for a healthy society.

The Arthritis Foundation of SA is the only body in South Africa providing non-medical support for arthritis patients, their families and carers. To do this we are involved in a wide range of education and support programmes, in providing access to information about these diseases, and by advocating the interests of people with arthritis in government, medical and media circles.
The National Office is in Cape Town and supports regional centres in Gauteng and Eastern Cape.

It is funded by its members through subscription fees based on the number of hospital beds of each member. HASA is mandated by its members to lead the industry by engaging proactively with government and other stakeholders on policy and legislative matters, to represent the interests of its members and the private sector in appropriate forums, to facilitate independent research to inform national health policy and healthcare reform, and to serve the interests of patients by promoting quality care and patient safety.
