The club was founded in 2003 and has grown bigger each year with 2017 being one of the most successful years the club has seen. The club trains two-three times a week at Settlers Dam where the canoes are stored in the racks there. Settlers Dam is situated in Thomas Baines Reserve and is a 20 minute drive from Grahamstown. The reserve and dam boasts beautiful scenery and many antelope including buffalo, kudu and waterbuck.
Continue reading →Reach for Recovery is an international breast cancer support group. It is affiliated to the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). It is a non-medical programme designed to help women with breast cancer in their return to daily life.
In South Africa, Reach for Recovery (RFR) is an autonomous non-profit organisation run by volunteers since the late 1960’s. Reach for Recovery is a breast cancer support organisation with a unique focus on breast cancer support and one of the only organisations that provide a patient support service on a national basis. It is built on a simple yet universal principle: that of one woman who has experienced breast cancer herself giving freely of her time and experience to assist and support another woman with breast cancer. Well-selected and trained volunteers, who each have experienced the breast cancer journey, render an emotional care and practical support programme to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families. In some of the regions a prosthesis service is also provided and the focus is also on indigent women that cannot afford this service. This service is done at no charge to the patient and is available to all state patients who can present a hospital card. The organisation sustains itself through localised fundraising activities and some regular sponsorships that have been associated with RFR over a long period.

Continue reading →The Racehorse Owners Association was incorporated in December 1997 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Horseracing Industry in Gauteng and the Gauteng Provincial Government. The essence of the agreement, signed on 30 June 1997, was that the parties agreed to re-organise and restructure the business of the racing industry into a single corporate entity to be listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as soon as practically possible. The new company would have a broad base of shareholders with specific emphasis on previously disadvantaged communities.
In terms of the agreement a ‘Racehorse Owners Association comprising owners and members of the previous turf clubs would make available the image of racing to the new company (Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Ltd) in exchange for a laid-down stakes policy which would be incorporated into the Phumelela / Racehorse Owners Association agreement’. The assets of the Totalisator Agency Board (TAB), the Highveld Racing Authority (HRA) and the previous Turf Clubs, including the racetracks, were transferred to Phumelela Gaming & Leisure Ltd as part of the corporatisation process.
When the Racehorse Owners Association was incorporated, its membership was made up of existing members of the turf clubs (Turffontein, Gosforth Park and Newmarket), plus existing members of the Gauteng Racehorse Owners Association (GROA) which was the final incarnation of the old Owners and Trainers structure. Following the inauguration of the Racehorse Owners Association, the assets of the clubs in the Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and at a later stage Western Cape were also transferred to Phumelela and their owners and members were automatically accepted by the Racehorse Owners Association.
