What is a Council?
A council often refers to a local government organisation, also known as a municipality. In South Africa, local government is divided into three spheres: national, provincial, and local. The local sphere is responsible for providing a range of services and functions to the communities within its jurisdiction.
Overall, the council plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being and development of the communities within its jurisdiction, and in improving the quality of life for all residents.
Other organisations that call themselves Councils also exist. These organisations, although not directly realted to local government, are oftentimes statuary. In other words, their existance has been legalised through an act of parliament. This is particularly true in the case of brgaining councils. Like local government councils, in addition to providing services and infrastructure, a council can also responsible for promoting economic development in a particular industry, promoting social and cultural activities, and ensuring that the rights of all stakeholderd within its jurisdiction are protected. This includes protecting the rights of vulnerable groups, such as women, children, and the elderly, and ensuring that all residents have access to basic services and infrastructure.
